About the Artist

CONTEMPORARY IMPRESSIONIST PAINTER

Why I Paint

“My passion for painting began with the powerful connection I feel to the landscape.

On the Eastern Shore of Maryland - my home - the marshes and estuaries, and the quality of the light from the big open sky all tantalize me. Can I reach out and grab them, and reduce them to paint?

In my figurative work, I am challenged to build the human form from a few essential elements - shapes and color - which on the canvas take on their own identities as I paint.

I am driven by an almost indescribable inner voice to create paintings which grab the viewer with their energy; yet also speak quietly, with poetic and soulful passages.”

Diane DuBois Mullaly was born in Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay, and grew up along the Jordan Creek near Allentown, Pennsylvania. After a childhood spent drawing and observing nature, she attended Tyler School of Art of Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a graphic design major.

Diane’s graphics career highlights include her position as Art Director for a woman’s fashion chain; and as a Graphic Designer in New York City in the corporate communications department of one of the world's largest banks. She then returned to Pennsylvania and sold antiques and collectibles for many years at the legendary Georgetown Flea Market, Washington, DC.

Now, Diane lives with her husband Russ, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. An award winning painter, Diane paints weekly with the Plein Air Painters of the Eastern Shore, has been juried into the Plein Air-Easton! competition five times, and frequently paints the portrait and figure from life. A popular instructor of studio, miniature and plein air oil painting workshops for all levels of students, please click Workshops for Diane's upcoming workshops and classes at the Academy Art Museum, Easton, Maryland and other venues. Diane is also developing a reputation for being a fair and thorough judge and juror of regional exhibits and competitions.

As a volunteer, Diane was  administrative manager of the Plein Air-Easton! Quick Draw competition from 2005 - 2011; has founded Paint Talbot!, a monthly paintout sponsored by the Talbot County Visual Arts Center; and annually organizes a group of about 30 Friday Morning Artists to decorate a tree for the Talbot Hospice fundraiser Festival of Trees.

Since she began painting, Diane has studied with numerous renowned national and regional oil painters. Her greatest influences have been instruction by Camille Przewodek, Tim Bell, Carolyn Anderson, Louis Escobedo, Ken DeWaard and Carol Marine; and her working relationship with Nancy Tankersley. She was encouraged early in her painting career by Joe Mayer and Joyce Zeigler.
